Today Marks Exactly 40 Years Legendary ‘Bob Marley’ Died

It’s been four decades since Bob Marley died, a time longer than the reggae icon’s brief but powerful existence, which was cut short by skin cancer when he was 36.

However, Marley lives on as a face of the oppressed, the tangible vibrancy, sense of rebellion, and spiritual zeal of his songs such as “One Love,” “Redemption Song,” and “I Shot The Sheriff” surviving in a way that few bodies of mainstream culture have.

His rich anthems of peace and struggle, optimism and frustration, continue to reverberate around the world, especially in his native Jamaica, a small country whose rich culture its most prominent son popularized on an international level.

“It’s said that the brightest stars don’t always shine as brightly, and in many respects, Bob Marley was our brightest star; he achieved a lot in a brief amount of time,” said Judy Mowatt, an original member of the influential I-Threes trio whose vocals backed Marley.
