“I Don’t Do Highlife, I Do Afropop” – Kojo Antwi
Kojo Antwi, the prominent Ghanaian musician, claims that his music does not belong in the highlife genre. He claims to be a musician who creates African Popular Music, commonly known as Afropop.
“Some people believe I play reggae, highlife, and other genres,” Mr. Music Man stated. But I'm an Afropop fan. I am a musician who performs in a variety of genres. There are so many rhythms in Afropop.”
Mr Antwi, speaking to Christian Agyei Frempong on Onua Fm's Anigye Mere, expressed regret that no Ghanaian singer was featured during World Music Day on June 21. There was no Ghanaian song in the top 100 African songs of all time on this day.
The current generation of Ghanaian singers are emulating Nigerians, while Nigerians have hijacked Ghana's Afropop.
Highlife, in my opinion, is a dynamic genre. And because the ancient instruments have given way to new technology, present musicians in Ghana are unable to play like the old highlife artists. They should, nevertheless, make every effort to maintain the Ghanaian identity.
