Since the violent thriller Squid Game debuted on Netflix and burst internationally, one of the actors has gathered tens of millions of admirers.
Jung Ho-Yeon, one of the Korean drama’s shining stars, has acquired a legion of new admirers almost overnight as violent new series Squid Game continues to dominate Netflix’s top ten list.
Since the series debuted, the actress’ Instagram following has increased from 400,000 to over 13 million, becoming Korea’s most popular actress.
The violent dystopian series premiered on September 17 and immediately became the most-watched show in 90 countries, making it one of Netflix’s most popular shows of all time.
Jung, 27, portrays Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector known as 067 who plays the Game in order to reconnect with her family.
Surprisingly, Squid Game is Jung’s first acting job, though she had previously featured on television.
Jung competed in Korea’s Next Top Model in 2013, placing in second place. She’s walked the runways for Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Prabal Gurung since her reality TV experience, and Vogue compared her to models Hanne Gaby Odiele and Cara Delevingne.
The actress admitted to W Korea that she only joined her acting agency in January when she began her acting career in the hugely acclaimed series.
“At the time, I assumed they’d train me to some level before putting me to work,” she told W Korea, according to NME.
“However, by February, our CEO had convened a group chat, and he handed me the Squid Game screenplay and instructed me to record and submit an audition video.” At the time, I was in New York for New York Fashion Week!
“The first thing I asked when my CEO informed me I’d been cast was, ‘Why?'” Jung remarked.
“I was overjoyed when I got the news, yet it was as though a bigger terror had overtaken me.” ‘Thank you very much, but I think I can handle this?’ I said.
Those wondering if Jung Ho-yeon is single should know that she has been dating actor Lee Dong-hwi, 36, since 2015.
