“I Was In Class 3 When I Hoisted The AFCON Trophy” – Mimi Boateng

Mimi Boateng, the young woman who lifted the AFCON trophy during the 2008 closing ceremony, describes herself as “lucky” to have been chosen to do so.

For years, a photo of Mimi carrying the AFCON trophy while being carried in a palanquin has gone viral.

She was just eight years old when Ghana hosted the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), yet she recalls every detail.

Mimi revealed to Pulse.com.gh that she was in Class 3 at the time and felt fortunate to have been a part of the closing ceremony.

“I believe I did [appreciate the significance of the incident].” I was quite enthusiastic about Ghana football at the time, and I was also very enthusiastic about the AFCON, so getting the chance to participate in the AFCON was something I considered a blessing… “I was in third grade,” she explained.

Mimi also talked about how she was picked to lift the AFCON trophy at the Accra Sports Stadium during the closing ceremony.

She didn’t find out she was scheduled to participate in the closing ceremony until a week before the event, according to her.

She stated that she traveled to the stadium with her father, who was a member of the closing ceremony’s organizers, and was told she would be performing.

“I was quite unhappy when Ghana fell in the semi-finals. In an exclusive interview with Pulse.com.gh, she stated, “My father was engaged in the closing ceremony, so he came one day and said we’re going to do something to make Ghanaians happy and elevate spirits.”

“I had no idea what he was talking about when I arrived at the stadium, but they explained everything to me, and I decided to participate in the closing ceremony.”
