Akwaboah, the Ghanaian singer, songwriter, and producer, has questioned the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards’ board of directors.

The highlife singer appears to be dissatisfied with the criteria used to choose performers for the “Artist of the Year” category. He has questioned the VGMA’s board of directors on how an artist can be nominated for the most prestigious award.

The spectacular performer, who was disappointed to be left out of the Artist of the Year category, told Castle FM’s host that he wanted to know what criteria were used to choose the winner. He said that he was nominated in six categories but didn’t win the artist of the year award.

He went on to say that the omission of highlife performers from the Artist of the Year category discredits the genre’s singers’ efforts to promote Ghanaian music.

What are the requirements for being nominated as artist of the year? In my case, I was nominated for Album of the Year, and two songs from that album were nominated for Songwriter of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Best Highlife Artiste, Best Highlife Song, and Record of the Year, but these works were somehow not good enough to be nominated for Artist of the Year. It just doesn’t make sense.

He did add, though, that he was unconcerned about it.
