Delay Narrates How People Called Her A Villager Because She Spoke Twi On Her Show
It's quite unfortunate how people just downgrade people who use the local dialect in the journalism space. This is the case of popular journalist Deloris Frimpong Manso, better known as “Delay as the Ghana Oprah Winfrey revealed in a recent interview that she was heavily chastised for using Twi for interviews on her popular Delay show.
According to Delay, who was speaking to Kojo Sebor on Pure FM, she was tagged a villager and an illeterate just because she wanted to pronounce the Ghanaian language, but it seems now big brands in Ghana are now using the local dialects for advertisements.
Of course, of course, I will boldly chest out to say I have made Twi language usage prestigious on the airwaves. When I came on television the first time, years ago, some people tagged me as a villager and illiterate for speaking Twi. “
“At that time, the likes of Maame Dokono and some oldies were frequenting the Twi language, while for the youngsters, the English language was the thing.”
But today, corporate brands like Coca-Cola, Vodafone, and Ideal Milk are all going along with some appealing Twi slogans for advertisement purposes. Twi has become the new flex.
I believe it is the way to go because Germans don't speak English and Italians don't utter Turkish. So we need to accept what we have and be proud of it. “
