Ghanaians don’t appreciate my father enough – Jackie Ankrah
Jackie Ankrah, a Ghanaian broadcast journalist and singer, believes her father, General J. A. Ankrah, is underappreciated.
The broadcaster said on Asaase 99.5 Accra's Between Hours show with Naa Ashorkor that while her father overthrew Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he did “so many things.”
The singer stated that when Ghanaians celebrate and remember past leaders, they should remember her father, former head of state Lieutenant General J A Ankrah, to inspire the next generation to do more for the country.
Jackie Ankrah said: “And just recently he was honored at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, and when they wrote and spoke about him, I was proud because my father has done so many things that we don't get told about, because we rewrite history all the time.”
“But I think these are things that we must talk about to encourage one another and encourage the next generation.
“We don't talk about my father much, which is unfortunate because of the Nkrumah overthrow. My father was the first in many things, but my father was an amazing, remarkable, incredible soldier,” the songwriter added.
J A Ankrah was Ghana's first military head of state and the chairman of the National Liberation Council from 1966 to 1969. Ankrah was also the chairperson of the Organization of African Unity from February 24 to November 5, 1966. Along with other NLC members, he overthrew Kwame Nkrumah.
