Asamoah Gyan

During the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, recalled in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah on YouTube how former president John Agyekum Kufuor drove all the way to the Black Stars camp to speak with him.

The Black Stars finished third in the continental championship, which was held in Ghana and hosted by that country. Gyan, on the other hand, was one of the tournament's most despised players after being singled out by the home crowd for his carelessness in front of goal.

The striker, who was only 22 years old at the time, had made plans to quit camp after Ghana's second group match against Namibia because the criticisms were so severe.But in order for him to change his mind, then-President John Agyekum Kufour had to step in.

He said in the interview that “my mother contacted me when I was in camp, and she was weeping, so I became irritated and decided not to play anymore.”

“The team was sleeping at the Fiesta Royale Hotel, and our former president Kufuor was at the African Regent Hotel, but he drove the entire distance to speak with me while using all of the sirens.” Although he was a tremendous admirer of mine, we had never really met before.

“I spoke with him privately.” I discovered how much he likes me. We continue to get along well to this day.
