Ghana doesn’t have any law that criminalizes LGBTQ+ persons — Nana Addo
According to Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, there is no law in Ghana that criminalizes anyone who identify as LGBTQ+.
The legalization of the LGBTQ+ bill, which is currently before Parliament, is one of the contentious issues in Ghana. Practically every Ghanaian has stood against the adoption of the measure into law.
When US Vice President Kamala Harris questioned him in the Jubilee House on Monday, March 27, 2023, about the LGBTQI measure that is presently before Parliament but has not yet been adopted by the parliamentarians.
He said: “It hasn’t been passed, so the statement that there is legislation in Ghana to that effect is not accurate.
“Parliament is dealing with it and at the end of the process, I will come in.”
The anti-LGBTQ bill, titled, “The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021”, was submitted to Parliament in June 2021.
Many Ghnanais believe that the president will approve the bill to be voted into law because of the financial assistance the US will be providing to the nation, which has caused them to be concerned about the present debates.
