Despite his fame and fortune, American hip-hop artist Jay-Z has not yet succeeded in becoming a Hollywood star like many of his rap counterparts. The reason for this is straightforward: he has never been an actor.
To talk about his collaboration with renowned music video director Hype Williams, the Roc Nation entrepreneur said in a rare interview with Complex that he has always been “guarded,” which has prevented him from going in front of the camera for a career in cinema and television.
Regarding the speculation that Hov was going to portray DMX in Williams’ 1998 film Belly, Hov said, “That’s just a rumor.
” I detested acting because it made me feel so defensive. I wouldn’t act because I would obstruct myself. “No, I don’t want to do something that I ain’t going to look cool,” would be my thought process.
But, as you may recall, I was naive and immature.
Or my mental age was young. You know, I wasn’t even speaking for around thirty seconds while I was in our own movies.
However, Jay-Z hasn’t entirely abandoned acting. The Brooklyn native gained notoriety for his role in the 1998 direct-to-home video thriller Streets Is Watching, which was released some months before to Belly.
