Her parents gave her a Spanish name, Lupita, after the events of the day. Her father, a former Kenyan Minister for Medical Services and Governor of Kisumu, Kenya, was a visiting lecturer in political science at El Colegio de México at the time of her birth.
Lupita gained international recognition for her role as Patsey in the film “12 Years a Slave,” for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has since appeared in various other films, including “Black Panther,” “Us,” and “Queen of Katwe.”
