Born in 1945 in New York City, Winkler attended DeWitt Clinton High School and Emerson College in Boston, where he graduated in theater arts in 1967.
He moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting, landing his first major acting role in 1974 as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on the sitcom Happy Days. Since Happy Days ended, Winkler has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including Night Shift (1982), Waterboy (1998), Arrested Development (2003-2006), and Barry (2018-present).
He has also directed episodes of Happy Days, MacGyver, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Winkler is also a successful author and children’s book author, having written books such as Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Underachiever (2003) and Alien Superstar (2018). His accolades include three Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Critics’ Choice Awards.
