Matthew Norman Niskanen (born December 6, 1986) is a retired American professional ice hockey defenseman who played 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers.
Niskanen was born in Virginia, Minnesota, and played high school hockey for the Virginia Blue Devils. He was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the first round, 28th overall, of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Stars in the 2007–08 season.
After four seasons with the Stars, Niskanen was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2011. He played three seasons with the Penguins, winning the Stanley Cup in 2016.
In 2014, Niskanen signed a seven-year contract with the Washington Capitals. He played five seasons with the Capitals, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2018.
In 2019, Niskanen signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. He played one season with the Flyers before retiring in 2020.
Niskanen was a two-time NHL All-Star (2015, 2016). He was also a member of the United States national team at the 2009 World Championships.
Niskanen was known for his two-way play, his ability to move the puck, and his shot. He was a key member of three Stanley Cup championship teams.
