Born on December 27, 1948, in Châteauroux, France, Gérard Depardieu was the fifth child of metal worker and volunteer firefighter René Maxime Lionel Depardieu and Anne Jeanne Josèphe. Born in 1923, they both passed away in 1988.

Gérard Depardieu was raised in poverty and was a proletariat from an impoverished background. He spent more time on the streets than in school, helping his mother with deliveries until leaving at the age of 13. He was illiterate and half-stammered, but he eventually picked up reading. In addition to working at a print shop, he boxed. He was placed on probation when he started selling stolen products.
