Wes Phillips, a former NFL head coach and grandson of longtime coach Bum Phillips, was one of Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell's first hires in 2022. Born in Houston, Texas, Phillips attended the University of Texas at El Paso and played football for the Miners before becoming the starting quarterback in 2000. He graduated from UTEP with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 2001.

Phillips played professional football in 2002 and 2003 with the San Diego Riptide and later worked as a quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M University. After his father's appointment as head coach of the Cowboys in 2007, Phillips joined his father's staff as a quality control/offensive assistant coach, helping the Cowboys win NFC East titles in 2007 and 2009.

In 2014, Phillips joined the Washington Redskins as tight ends coach under Jay Gruden, working with notable tight ends Vernon Davis and Jordan Reed. In 2019, Phillips joined the Los Angeles Rams as tight ends coach, reunited with both McVay and his father. He remained with the organization in 2020 and added the title of pass game coordinator in 2021.
