Acclaimed German racer Michael Schumacher was a renowned Formula One driver known for his fast laps, fitness regimen, and outworking competitors.
He was praised by Slate magazine as “the ultimate driving machine” and “the most dominant athlete in the world” due to his outworking of competitors in the weight room.
Michael Schumacher’s driving style was praised for its sensitivity and flexibility on the gas and brakes, often using both the brake and accelerator pedals at the same time. He won 17 of the 30 races in wet conditions, earning nicknames such as “Regenkönig” (rain king) or “Regenmeister” (rain master).
Schumacher made his Formula One debut with the Irish Jordan-Ford team at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix. He impressed Jordan designer Gary Anderson and team manager Trevor Foster during a test drive at Silverstone and qualified seventh.
After retiring on the first lap of the race with clutch problems, Schumacher retired. In 1992, he drove for Benetton-Ford at the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix. He finished the 1991 season with four points out of six races, finishing fifth in his second race, the Italian Grand Prix.
Schumacher won his first and second drivers’ titles consecutively in 1994 and 1995. He moved to the struggling Ferrari team in 1996, losing out on the title in the final race of the season in 1997 and 1998. He and Ferrari won five consecutive titles from 2000 to 2004, including unprecedented sixth and seventh titles, breaking several records.
After retiring from the sport, Schumacher made a brief return with Mercedes from 2010 to 2012.
