William Granger OAM aka. Bill Granger lived from 29 August 1969 – 25 December 2023. He was an Australian self-taught cook, restaurateur, and food writer who worked internationally. His family broke the devastating news of his death to the public on the solemn day of December 26, 2023. The tragic incident happened inside the hospital’s gates in London, where Granger was a patient.

Cancer is believed to be the cause of his tragic death, a disease that Granger valiantly fought for several months after learning of his illness. This disclosure illuminates the difficulties and struggles he endured secretly despite making noteworthy contributions to the food industry and other fields.

He relocated from Melbourne to Sydney in the late 1980s to study art, working as a waiter while he studied. His interest in food led him to open Bills in 1993, which became known for its creamy scrambled eggs. In 1996, Bills Surry Hills opened, followed by Bills Woollahra. In 2008, he opened the first Bills restaurant outside Australia in Japan, where he had lived for half a year. Since then, he has opened eight restaurants in Japan, including Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Fukuoka, and Osaka.

In 2011, Granger opened his first UK restaurant, Granger & Co, in London’s Westbourne Grove. In 2014, he opened a second London-based Granger & Co in Clerkenwell, and a new Bills restaurant in Hawaii. In that same year, he also opened his first restaurant in Seoul and had two restaurants in the country.

Granger wrote several cookbooks, including Bill’s Sydney Food, Bill’s Open Kitchen, Simply Bill, Bill Granger Every Day, Holiday, Bill’s Basics, Bill’s Everyday Asian, Bill Granger Easy, Bill’s Italian Food, and Australian Food. His media work included a six-part series, Bill’s Food, which followed Granger for a week and screened on BBC2 in the United Kingdom in 2005, drawing an audience of 2 million. In 2006, Granger appeared on GMTV to present a week-long barbecue special filmed in the South of France. A second series of Bill’s Food was aired on various networks, and in 2009, a seven-part television series, Bill’s Holiday, was released featuring Granger’s travels exploring the varying regions and produce of Australia.
