He was a four-star recruit and initially committed to DePaul before switching to Texas Tech.

Shannon’s college career began with a season-high 24 points and eight rebounds in a 65-60 overtime loss to DePaul. He averaged 9.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as a freshman and earned Third Team All-Big 12 honors as a sophomore. In 2021, he declared for the 2021 NBA draft while maintaining college eligibility. He returned to Texas Tech but was suspended indefinitely due to an eligibility review.

In 2022, he committed to Illinois and played in the NBA draft combine. He withdrew from the draft and returned to Illinois for a second season and his fifth overall season.

On December 27, 2023, Shannon was taken into custody on charges of rape, having sex without consent, and using force. He was also charged with sexual battery on another occasion, claiming he inappropriately handled a teenager. The team suspended Shannon after he posted bail the next day.
