He began her career at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago and later moved to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He was a four-star prospect who committed to Texas Tech after initially considering DePaul. Despite offers from DePaul, Florida State, Georgetown, and Illinois, Shannon chose to join the Red Raiders.
In December 2019, Shannon scored a season-high 24 points and eight rebounds, earning him a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. He was added to the watch list for the Julius Erving Award and named to the Third Team All-Big 12 as a sophomore.
Shannon was announced for the 2021 NBA draft but returned to Texas Tech. His eligibility was reviewed and he was placed on indefinite leave. He returned to the field after three games and averaged 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per game as a junior.
Shannon made his Illinois commitment in April 2022 and participated in the NBA draft combine following his freshman year. He filed for the 2023 NBA draft but decided not to enter and spent his second and last season at Illinois.
On December 27, 2023, Shannon was taken into custody on charges of rape, having sex without consent, and using force. He was also charged with sexual battery on another occasion, claiming he inappropriately handled a teenager. The team suspended Shannon after he posted bail the next day.
