English political consultant and lobbyist Derek Draper died on January 5, 2024, at the age of 56. Draper started his political career in 1990 as Nick Brown’s constituency secretary. He was born in Chorley, Lancashire. He was a director, political editor, and researcher.

Born in Chorley, Lancashire, Derek Draper ( 15 August 1967- 5 January 2024), began his political career in 1990 as the constituency secretary for Nick Brown. He later worked as a researcher for MP Peter Mandelson and later as a director of GPC Market Access, where he set up the New Labour organization Progress with Liam Byrne. In the late 1990s, Draper worked as the Political Editor of the Modern Review, briefly a columnist for the Daily Express, and a presenter on Talk Radio UK.
In 1998, while working at GPC Market Access, Draper was caught on tape boasting to Greg Palast, an undercover reporter from The Observer, about selling access to government ministers and creating tax breaks for their clients. The story was dubbed “Lobbygate” and Draper was sacked from his job at the Daily Express and generally shunned by Labour insiders.
After leaving politics, Draper retrained as a psychotherapist, obtaining an MA in clinical psychology after three years in Berkeley, California. He worked as the development director of a community counseling center and later claimed to have entered private practice in Marylebone, London. He clarified that he studied at the Wright Institute of California, a graduate school founded by Nevitt Sanford.
Draper was a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and wrote an occasional column for the Mail on Sunday newspaper on psychotherapy issues and monthly columns in Psychologies and Therapy Today. He was also the author of a chapter in The Future of the NHS.

On 5 January 2024, Draper died from related COVID-19 complications at the age of 56.
