At the age of 56, English political advisor and lobbyist Derek Draper fell dead on January 5, 2024. Draper, who was up in Chorley, Lancashire, started his political career in 1990 working as Nick Brown’s constituency secretary. Later, he served as a director of GPC Market Access, where he founded the New Labour organization Progress, and as a researcher for MP Peter Mandelson. Draper was the Modern Review’s political editor as well.
In 1998, while working at GPC Market Access, Draper was caught on tape boasting to Greg Palast, an undercover reporter from The Observer, about selling access to government ministers and creating tax breaks for their clients. The story was dubbed “Lobbygate” and Draper was sacked from his job at the Daily Express and generally shunned by Labour insiders.
After leaving politics, Draper retrained as a psychotherapist, obtaining an MA in clinical psychology after three years in Berkeley, California. He worked as the development director of a community counseling center and later claimed to have entered private practice in Marylebone, London. He clarified that he studied at the Wright Institute of California, a graduate school founded by Nevitt Sanford.
Draper was a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and wrote an occasional column for the Mail on Sunday newspaper on psychotherapy issues and monthly columns in Psychologies and Therapy Today. He was also the author of a chapter in The Future of the NHS.

It is with profound grief that we announce the passing of Derek Draper, best known for being presenter Kate Garraway’s husband.
Draper became ill with COVID-19 in March 2020 and was sent to an intensive care unit. After ten weeks in critical condition, he opened his eyes and went home in April 2021. His wife said he was still inconsolable and unable to move. Draper slept for twenty hours a day and received attention around the clock.
He went to Mexico in February and March of 2022 for therapy. He had trouble speaking in April 2022 and needed 24-hour care. He experienced a heart arrest in December 2023 and was admitted once more in extremely critical condition. Draper passed away on January 5, 2024, at the age of 56, due to complications stemming from COVID-19.
