Born in Philadelphia, Jill Scott is an American singer, songwriter, model, poet, and actress known for her unique vocal style blending jazz, opera, R&B, spoken word, and hip hop. Her 2000 debut album, Who Is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1, went platinum, and her follow-ups, Beautifully Human and The Real Thing, both achieved gold status. Scott’s music has been featured on platforms like YouTube, Pharoahe Monch’s W.A.R., Kirk Franklin’s “I Smile,” Substantial’s “Jackin’ Jill,” and Dr. Dre’s third album.

She attended Temple University and later dropped out of college to pursue a career as a high school English teacher. Scott is a soprano who has infused jazz, opera, R&B, spoken word, and hip-hop in a style often called neo-soul.

Scott made her film debut in 2007 in Hounddog and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? and starred in the BBC/HBO series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in 2008. After a four-year hiatus from music, Scott released her fourth album, The Light of the Sun, in 2011. She also starred in the film Get on Up in 2014 and released her fifth album, Woman in 2015.

In 2018, Scott appeared in The CW DC Comics superhero series Black Lightning as Lady Eve. In May 2020, she and Erykah Badu participated in the first livestream battle between women, with over 700,000 viewers tuning in. Scott has also appeared in Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, Goldtrix’s song “It’s Love (Trippin’)”, and Lupe Fiasco’s “Daydreaming”.

Jill has also been featured in various music videos, including Kirk Franklin’s “I Smile” video and rapper Substantial’s “Jackin’ Jill.” In 2015, she was featured on Dr. Dre’s third album, and in 2016 on The Hamilton Mixtape.
