Born on July 31, 1985, Allie X is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and visual artist whose true name is Alexandra Ashley Hughes. Her career began in Toronto’s indie pop scene in the mid-2000s after she moved to Oakville, Ontario, where she was reared.
After completing the Musical Theatre Performance program at Sheridan College, she studied classical piano and voice at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. Hughes rose to fame with “Catch,” her debut single, which peaked at number 55 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart.
Allie X released her debut extended play in 2015, CollXtion I, followed by her debut studio album CollXtion II in 2017, and Super Sunset in 2018. In 2006, she self-released a 10-track demo album called “Waiting for the Prize” in Toronto’s underground club scene.
She moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to become a full-time songwriter and collaborated with Prescription Songs. Her debut single, “Catch,” was released in 2014, which helped launch her solo career. She released two EPs, CollXtion I and CollXtion II, in 2015 and 2017, respectively.
Her sound combines pop, electronic, and synth-pop components, with her songwriting often addressing themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. Her third EP, Super Sunset, featured more dance and disco themes. Her fourth album, Cape God, was released in 2020, inspired by her return to Canada and exploring home, family, and nostalgia themes.
Her debut album, CollXtion I, was a critical and commercial success, featuring hit singles “Catch” and “Paper Planes.” Her second album, CollXtion II, was even more successful, featuring “Not in Love” and “Supernatural.”
In 2018, Hughes released her third EP, Super Sunset, an experimental departure from her earlier music, which received mixed reviews. Her second studio album, Cape God, was a critical and commercial success, with personal lyrics and beautiful production.
Hughes is known for her unique sound, which combines pop, electronica, and synth-pop components. Critics have praised her songwriting, production, and singing abilities, with her artistic aesthetic described as “pop art meets cyberpunk.” In 2014 and 2015, she co-wrote seven tracks for Australian singer Troye Sivan’s album Blue Neighbourhood, supporting him on his 2016 tour’s North American leg.
Is Allie X Gay or Lesbian?
Renowned Canadian musician Allie X is unmarried. Her sexual orientation remains unknown, raising questions over whether or not she identifies as gay. Allie X, however, has made it clear time and time again that she is in favor of women’s rights and the LGBT community, saying, “I have a lot of young fans and LGBT fans.” These days, after seeing and hugging so many of them, I try to write to them, offering my support whenever I can.
