Lily Gladstone, born on August 2, 1986, is an American actress of Piegan Blackfeet, Nez Perce, and European heritage. She made her film debut in Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian (2012) and collaborated with filmmaker Kelly Reichardt in independent films Certain Women (2016) and First Cow (2019).

Gladstone has appeared in HBO’s Room 104, Showtime’s Billions (2016), and FX’s Reservation Dogs (2021–2023). She was inspired to become an actress after watching Return of the Jedi at five. Gladstone’s first acting experience was when Missoula Children’s Theatre cast her as an evil step-sister in Cinderella.

She graduated from Mountlake Terrace High School in 2004 and the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting/Directing and a Native American Studies minor. She taught acting classes and workshops in her native community and created a “sculpture garden” for violence prevention. Gladstone earned critical acclaim for her role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) and became the first Native American to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.

Gladstone hosted a film production-related series on the instructional YouTube channel Crash Course in 2017. Before starring in Morrisa Maltz’s 2022 feature The Unknown Country, she had a brief role in Reichardt’s 2019 film First Cow. For this film, she won the Gotham Independent Feature Award for Outstanding Lead Performance.

Her performance was praised by critics and called the movie’s high point. It was claimed by /Film critic Josh Spiegel that she “brought (Mollie) to life with incredible passion”. Her triumph in 2024 for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama made her the first woman of Indigenous (Native American) descent to be nominated for and to receive a Golden Globe for acting.

Her nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress makes her the first Native American and fourth Indigenous woman to receive the honor.
