Darlington Agyekum known in the music industry as Dr Cryme has said celebrities should be used to educate the public instead of banning them from endorsing alcohol and betting.

The decision by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to ban celebrities from endorsing alcoholic products was recently upheld by the Supreme Court ruling despite an appeal.

Speaking on Cape Coast-based Property FM, he said “I know that the FDA brought this law which sought to ban celebrities from endorsing alcoholic beverages and betting but how have these laws stopped people from doing it further?

“Has alcoholism reduced in Ghana since that law was brought and I think people are now doing it more following the action by the Supreme Court,” he asked.

He remarked “In the past, we engaged musicians to create music when we wanted to educate the public about something or we wanted to curtail certain untoward behaviours.

Dr Cryme fumed “If you feel that alcoholism and betting are destroying the youth, you have to use the same celebrities to find a way to pass the message on instead of banning celebrity endorsements”.
