The designer of President John Mahama’s “agbada,” which he wore during his inauguration on January 7, 2025, Matthew Agambire, has disclosed that the President participated in the design process.
The Bondaana fashion brand’s owner, Matthew, revealed the design’s inspiration in an interview with JoyNews.
“President Mahama has a strong belief in Ghana and wants something that was created by, for, and of Ghana. I offered him some thoughts about what I wanted to achieve when I approached him about creating the ensemble. In actuality, he had a significant role in helping to co-create the brand. Therefore, he stated that he would require a Ghanaian to perform it and that he would need something that symbolizes Ghana.
Matthew said, “I had been planning and thinking on what to do on his outfit for the past two months,” when asked whose choice it was to include the Adinkra symbols in the design. Accordingly, behind the scenes, I would often come up with something and show it to him before he gave his approval or input. I thus came up with the Adinkra symbols first and presented them to him for his approval. So, we worked together as a team.”
