The contentious betting tax should be abolished, according to Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ghana’s finance minister-designate, who has effectively argued that doing so will not impede the country’s economic development.
“Scrapping the betting tax will not affect the forward march of the economy,” he told the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025, when he was being vetted.
Instead of enacting new taxes or raising current ones, Dr. Forson emphasized that enhancing tax compliance is the way to increase government income.
“It is not necessary to raise taxes in order to boost revenue. In order to improve the nation’s fiscal performance without placing an undue strain on taxpayers, he added, “It is crucial to increase compliance.”
Claims that he intends to ask the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for further funding are untrue, the minister designate added.
Dr. Forson said that his previous comments on the subject had been misreported by the press.
“I didn’t say I was going to ask the IMF for more funding,” he said categorically. It’s erroneous coverage. I mentioned that we may ask for more funding if necessary.
