Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe was relieved of his priestly duties by the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Nigeria.
This comes after it was discovered that he was having a secret wedding in the United States.
Per Diocese sources both the clergy and the faithful were shocked by Fr. Okanatotor’s secret union.
Since celibacy is a fundamental vow required of priests by the Catholic Church marriage is a clear violation of canonical law.
The Diocese of Warri issued a formal statement saying that it was disappointed by the incident and that accountability and adherence to Church teachings are important.
“This unfortunate situation undermines the sacred trust placed in our clergy and the commitment they vow to uphold. As a result, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe is hereby suspended from all priestly functions, effective immediately,” – A part of the statement read.
Priests were also reassured by the Diocese that it is still dedicated to honesty and openness.
To learn the whole truth about the situation including how the marriage was performed and whether there were any violations of church protocol prior to the discovery an internal investigation has been started.
