In Major League Baseball, Wakefield’s career spanned an impressive 19 seasons starting his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992 before joining the Boston Red Sox in 1995, where he was considered the longest-serving player on the team from 1995 until 2012. Wakefield advanced to Double-A in 1991, leading all Pirates minor leaguers in wins, innings pitched, and complete games. He spent most of 1994 with Triple-A Buffalo, leading the league in losses, walks, and home runs allowed. In the early 1990s, he was signed by the Boston Red Sox and began his career as a starter. In 1999, he was installed as the new closer and returned to the starting rotation. In 2005, he agreed to a $4 million, one-year “rolling” contract extension.
