Justin David Pugh, born in Holland, Pennsylvania in 1990, started his football career at Rock High School South Council. Initially aspiring to be a professional hockey player, he shifted to football and excelled in his sophomore year.

Pugh won second-team all-zone player honors as an offensive tackle and was named second-team all-state on defense in 2008. He also won team MVP and Defensive Player of the Year as team captain.

Pugh played college football at Syracuse University, earning All-Big East conference honors for three consecutive seasons. He entered the NFL Draft in 2013 with one year of college eligibility left and was cleared to play in the Senior Bowl.
