Irish amateur coach, John Conlan is the father of the pro boxers Michael Conlan and Jamie Conlan. He has gained widespread recognition as the coach of his son, winning the Irish national flyweight champion 3x.

Following the remarkable career of his son, Michael Conlan, who is a three-time Irish national flyweight champion and won his first Ulster novice title at the age of 11. He won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and a silver medal at the 2013 European Championships. Conlan moved up to bantamweight and won the gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In 2015, he won the European Championships at bantamweight and won the gold medal at the 2015 World Championships. Conlan was named as the RTÉ Sports Person of the Year for 2015. After the 2016 Olympics, Conlan reaffirmed his intentions of turning professional and made his professional debut at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. He won his first fight as a professional boxer in 2017, and in 2019, he faced Diego Alberto Ruiz.

 Conlan returned to featherweight in 2021 and faced T. J. Doheny for the vacant WBA interim featherweight title. In 2022, he made his ring return to face Miguel Marriaga of Colombia. Conlan faced controversy in the 2016 Summer Olympics, where he was eliminated by a controversial call in the men's bantamweight quarterfinal stage.
