Donald Tusk is a Polish politician, who has been serving as Prime Minister of Poland since 13 December 2023. He has held multiple positions in Polish politics since the late 1980s, including President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019, and President of the European People’s Party (EPP) from 2019 to 2022.
Tusk co-founded the Civic Platform (PO) party in 2001 and has been involved in politics since the late 1980s. He was a co-founder of the Liberal Democratic Congress party (KLD) and the Freedom Union.
In 2001, he was elected to the Senate and co-founded the PO. After losing his bid to become Poland’s president in the 2005 election, Tusk became prime minister after leading the PO to victory in the 2007 legislative election.
He stepped down from politics in 2014 and went on to become the third longest-serving prime minister in Poland’s history as well as the longest-serving prime minister of the Third Polish Republic. Tusk rejoined Polish politics in 2021, serving as the Civic Platform’s leader.
His Civic Coalition ended the Law and Justice party’s eight-year rule in the Sejm with 157 seats in the 2023 election.
