Born in 1957 in Concord, New Hampshire, Condo studied guitar, music composition, and drawing. He attended the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he studied art history and music theory. Condo joined the proto-synth/punk band The Girls and later became a founding member of the punk/blues band Hi Sheriffs of Blue.
He coined the term Artificial Realism, blending traditional European Old Master painting with American pop sensibility. Condo’s work has influenced artists like Nigel Cooke, Sean Landers, John Currin, Lisa Yuskavage, and Glenn Brown. His work has been exhibited worldwide and has permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

George Condo, a renowned artist, began his career in Boston with The Girls, a proto-synth band. He later met visual artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and moved to New York City to pursue a career in the visual arts. Condo’s art gained prominence in the early 1980s, coining the term “artificial realism” to describe his unique blend of European painting traditions and American pop sensibility.
From 1981 to 1983, Condo held his first public exhibitions at Andy Warhol’s industrial facility. He briefly relocated to Los Angeles, where he had his first solo exhibition at Ulrike Kantor Gallery, and then to Cologne, Germany, where he collaborated with Mulheimer Freiheit artists. In 1984, Condo had his first European solo show at the Monika Sprüth Gallery.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Condo collaborated with notable personalities such as William S. Burroughs, French philosopher Félix Guattari, and rapper Kanye West. His work was featured in the Pat Hearn Gallery in New York in 1997 and a collection of poems and etchings titled “Ghost of Chance.” Condo has also worked on commissions for book and album covers with various authors and performers, including Kanye West and Phish.
His work is housed in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Broad Foundation.
