Pete Carroll

Pete Carroll, a former American football coach, is an advisor and executive vice president for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He was head coach of the Seahawks from 2010 to 2023 and was the head football coach at the University of Southern California from 2001 to 2009. Carroll is known for aggressive play-calling, a bend-but-don’t-break scheme on defense, and drawing inspiration from the 1974 book The Inner Game of Tennis by tennis coach W. Timothy Gallwey. He also cites influences from psychologists Abraham Maslow and Carl Jung, Buddhist meditation master Chögyam Trungpa, and Zen master D. T. Suzuki.

Carroll’s coaching philosophy is based on “I’m a competitor,” which he exemplified after being fired by the New England Patriots. He has been known to plan elaborate surprises and pranks during practice to lighten the mood and reward the players. Under his tenure, nearly all USC practices were open to the public, making mundane drills seem more interesting and preparing the team for larger crowds on game days.

Carroll favorably compares college recruiting to any other competition and enjoys the ability to recruit talent, which he was unable to do in the NFL. He likens being a college head coach to being both the “coach and general manager.” Under his tenure, days had descriptive nicknames like Tell the Truth Monday, Competition Tuesday, and Turnover Wednesday.

Pete Carroll Career

Pete Carroll, a former head coach at the University of the Pacific, played football at the College of Marin before transferring to the University of the Pacific. He earned All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association honors and was inducted into the Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. Carroll worked as a graduate assistant at Pacific and later at the University of Arkansas, Iowa State University, and North Carolina State University. He entered the NFL in 1984 as the defensive backs coach of the Buffalo Bills and worked with various teams. Carroll was fired after one season due to a “clock play” incident. In 2000, he was named the head coach of the USC Trojans and was considered a better fit for college football than the NFL. His teams won two national championships and played for another, breaking school records and home attendance records. Carroll’s goal was to focus on winning the Rose Bowl, not national championships.

Has Pete Carroll Retired?

Pete Carroll continues to hold up. He recently resigned from his position as the Seahawks’ head coach to become an executive vice president and advisor.
