“Wealthy Individuals In Ghana Aren’t Contributing To The Society As Much” – Michael Blackson
US-Ghanian comedian Michael Blackson recently discussed selfishness, a major problem he feels fuels the problems facing his own nation.
“We have a reputation for being selfish, which is often a factor in the difficulties we face because we struggle with generosity,” Blackson said in a talk with Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM). Many of the wealthy people in this place just think about themselves.
He brought up the differences in taxation between Ghana and the United States, where the wealthiest pay less in taxes while high-earners in the former contribute a sizeable amount of their profits.
“In the United States, taxes take up a sizable portion of a person’s annual income of one million dollars. But that load is less here since rich people aren’t making as much of a contribution, Blackson said.
He emphasized that this offers the wealthy a chance to acknowledge their social responsibilities and contribute back to their local communities.
“How are you supporting your people? The importance of giving was underscored by him as he asked people to “wake up and find ways to contribute.”
Blackson’s remarks were made in relation to conversations concerning his “Michael Blackson Academy,” a program that provides free education to kids in the Central Region of Ghana.
He conveyed the hope that these kinds of initiatives will encourage more affluent people to help the underprivileged in their nation.
“My goal is to make everyone more compassionate by opening their eyes and encouraging a shift in mindset,” he said in closing.
