Lupita was born on March 1, 1983, in Mexico City, Mexico, but she was raised in Kenya. Her complete name is Lupita Amodi Nyong’o, a dual Kenyan and Mexican citizen. She is of Luo descent and is the second of six children brought forth by Dorothy Ogada Buyu and Peter Anyang Nyong’o.

 Her parents gave her a Spanish name, Lupita, after the events of the day. Her father, a former Kenyan Minister for Medical Services and Governor of Kisumu, Kenya, was a visiting lecturer in political science at El Colegio de México at the time of her birth.

Lupita gained international recognition for her role as Patsey in the film “12 Years a Slave,” for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has since appeared in various other films, including “Black Panther,” “Us,” and “Queen of Katwe.”

In 2018, Nyong’o was announced as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the film category. She starred in a Calvin Klein campaign and was a two-time honoree for Elle magazine’s “Women in Hollywood” issue.

Nyong’o made her music debut with “Sulwe’s Song” and was featured on Ciara’s song “Melanin” under the moniker “Troublemaker”.
