Wes Phillips is the son of Wade Phillips, a former NFL head coach. In addition, he is the grandson of long-time coach Bum Phillips. In 2022, he was one of Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell's first appointments.

Wes Phillips was born to Wade Phillips,  an American football coach who is currently the head coach of the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL and Laurie Phillips.

Wade Phillips, Wes's father has previously served as head coach of the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, and Houston Texans. Phillips is considered one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL, having served in eight stints with seven different franchises. Under his system, several players have won Defensive Player of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, and Super Bowl MVP. Phillips' lone Super Bowl victory saw defensive player Von Miller named MVP.

 Just like his father , Wes Phillips played professional football as a quarterback for the San Diego Riptide in 2002 and 2003. After returning to UTEP, he worked as a student assistant before becoming a quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M University in 2004. In 2005, the Buffaloes won the Lone Star Conference with an 8-1 record, leading NCAA Division II's top-ranked passing offense.

He played a crucial role in the development of quarterback Dalton Bell. He later worked at Baylor and later joined his father Wade Phillips as head coach in 2007. Together, they helped the Cowboys win NFC East titles in 2007 and 2009. However, Wade Phillips was fired in 2010, and Wes remained in Dallas under his father's successor Jason Garrett. He later became an assistant offensive line coach in 2011 and 2012, and was named tight ends coach for the 2013 season.

Wes Phillips began his coaching career in 2014 with the Washington Redskins under Jay Gruden. He worked with Sean McVay, who had previously been Washington's tight ends coach.

He worked with notable tight ends like Vernon Davis and Jordan Reed, who made the Pro Bowl in 2016. In 2019, Phillips joined the Los Angeles Rams as tight ends coach, reunited with McVay and his father as defensive coordinator. He remained with the Rams until 2020, when he added the title of pass game coordinator. In 2021, he earned his first Super Bowl ring when the Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.
