Wes Phillips is the son of former NFL head coach Wade Phillips and grandson of longtime coach Bum Phillips. He became one of Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell's first hires in 2022. He has been raised in an athletic family, with his support and encouragement from his close ones

Born in Houston, Texas, Wes is a former NFL head coach and grandson of longtime coach Bum Phillips. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso and played football for the Miners before becoming the starting quarterback in 2000. Phillips graduated from UTEP with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 2001.

Phillips played professional football in 2002 and 2003 as a quarterback with the San Diego Riptide of the AF2 Arena football league. After his playing career, he returned to UTEP, where he spent one season as a student assistant. In 2004, he was hired as a quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M University, where he helped guide the development of quarterback Dalton Bell.

After his father (Wade) was hired as head coach of the Cowboys in 2007, Phillips joined his father's staff as a quality control/offensive assistant coach. Working together, Phillips helped the Cowboys win NFC East titles in 2007 and 2009. However, Wade Phillips was fired in 2010, and Phillips remained in Dallas working under his father's successor Jason Garrett.

In 2014, Phillips joined the Washington Redskins as tight ends coach under new head coach Jay Gruden. He worked with notable tight ends like Vernon Davis and Jordan Reed, who made the Pro Bowl following the 2016 season.

In 2019, Phillips joined the Los Angeles Rams as tight ends coach, reunited with both McVay and his father. He remained with the organization in 2020, adding the title of pass game coordinator in 2021.
