David Soul's family moved frequently during his youth, resulting in fluency in German and Spanish. His brother Daniel became a Lutheran Pastor. He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where his father taught political science and history at Augustana College.

He attended Augustana College for two years before moving to Mexico City, where he studied at the University of the Americas. Inspired by students who taught him to play the guitar, Soul changed his direction and pursued his passion for music. His first on-stage appearance was in a Minneapolis club, The 10 O'Clock Scholar.

He began his acting career as a founding member of the Firehouse Theatre Company in Minneapolis. His breakthrough came in the classic crime-solving series Starsky & Hutch, which ran from 1975 to 1979 and became one of the most popular TV shows of all time. Soul also appeared in several British television programs, including “Holby City”, “Little Britain”, and “Lewis.”

He was known for his roles in Here Come The Brides, Magnum Force, The Yellow Rose, and Salem's Lot. Soul scored a U.S. chart-topping hit in 1977 with “Don't Give Up on Us” and his song “Silver Lady” was No. 1 in the United Kingdom. Soul suffered from cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in recent years but never lost his sense of humor.
