Currently, an unrestricted free agent, Eric Staal is a Canadian professional ice hockey center who spent time with the Florida Panthers. The Carolina Hurricanes selected him second overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Having won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006, the World Championship in 2007, and the Winter Olympics in 2010 with Team Canada, Staal is a member of the Triple Gold Club.

Eric Staal began playing hockey at the age of four. Together with his younger brothers, he played on their home ice rink. Forwards Joe Sakic and Wayne Gretzky were his inspirations as a child.

His interest in hockey was evident as a child and his father helped nurture the craft in him. His father played hockey for the Lakehead Thunderwolves from 1978 to 1983. He took up the jersey number 12 in his teams, the same number his father wore when he was playing hockey.

He began playing professionally in the minor leagues for the Thunder Bay Kings organization of the Triple-A, leading his Bantam team to an All-Ontario Championship in the 1999–2000 season.

Staal was then selected by the Peterborough Petes in the first round, 13th overall in the 2000 Ontario Hockey League (OHL). To the surprise of many, including his father, Henry who felt he wasn’t ready for the league,Eric  Staal finished his first season with 49 points in 63 games. He bettered the points the following season at 62 points.

After excellent performances season after season, he was selected second overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes just behind Marc-André Fleury who was the number one pick.

He made his debut just after being drafted. Staal led the team to the Stanley Cup in 2006, where they won against the Edmonton Oilers, and in that match, Eric scored 28 points. Eric was named captain of the Edmonton Oilers in 2010.

Staal was traded to the New York Rangers by the Hurricanes in 2016; after a couple of months, he joined the Minnesota Wilds and played his 1000th game with the team. Buffalo Sabres, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Florida Panthers.
