Pete Carroll

, a former American football coach, is currently the executive vice president for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). He served as head coach of the Seahawks from 2010 to 2023 and as head football coach at the University of Southern California from 2001 to 2009.

Carroll is known for aggressive play-calling, a bend-but-don't-break scheme on defense, and drawing inspiration from various sources, including tennis coach W. Timothy Gallwey's book The Inner Game of Tennis, psychologists Abraham Maslow and Carl Jung, Buddhist meditation master Chögyam Trungpa, and Zen master D. T. Suzuki.

's coaching philosophy is based on “I'm a competitor,” which he exemplified after being fired by the New England Patriots. He plans elaborate surprises and pranks during practice to lighten the mood and reward players. Under his tenure, nearly all USC practices were open to the public, making mundane drills more interesting and preparing the team for larger crowds on game days. Carroll favors college recruiting over any other competition and likens being a college head coach to being both the “coach and general manager.”

Pete Carroll's career began at the University of the Pacific and later at the University of Arkansas, Iowa State University, and North Carolina State University. He entered the NFL in 1984 as the defensive backs coach of the Buffalo Bills and worked with various teams. In 2000, he was named head coach of the USC Trojans, and his teams won two national championships and broke school and home attendance records.

He was hired as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks after Jim L. Mora's firing, led the team to a 4-2 start in 2010, and became the first 7-9 team in NFL history to win a division title. In 2012, Carroll led the team to an 11-5 record, including undefeated at home.

In 2014, the Seahawks won their first Super Bowl win in franchise history, defeating the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Seahawks finished the regular season 6–0, reaching their second consecutive NFC Championship.

Pete Carroll and the Seahawks named Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator, leading to a successful start for Seattle's offense. However, the Seahawks struggled in the 2021 season, losing four of their final six games. Despite this, Carroll and general manager John Schneider retained their jobs for the 2022 season. In 2023, Carroll led the Seahawks to a 9-8 record but was eliminated from the playoffs. On January 10, 2024, Carroll stepped down as head coach and will remain with the team as an advisor.
