Peter Clay Carroll, aka Pete Carroll (born on September 15, 1951) is a former American football coach who served as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2023. He was also the head football coach at the University of Southern California from 2001 to 2009, where he won seven bowl games and two National Championships in 2003 and 2004. Born in San Francisco, California, He attended Greenbrae School and Redwood High School.

Carroll played football for two years at the University of the Pacific before transferring to the University of Arkansas. He earned All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association honors and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1973. After graduation, Carroll tried out for the Honolulu Hawaiians but did not make the team due to shoulder problems and his small size.

His energetic and positive personality made him an attractive candidate for head coaching positions at various universities, including the University of Arkansas, Iowa State University, Ohio State University, North Carolina State University, and Bob Cope. He entered the NFL in 1984 as the defensive backs coach of the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Stanford University, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, and New England Patriots.

Carroll's career began with minimal success with the New York Jets in 1994 and the New England Patriots from 1997 to 1999. He then transitioned to college football with USC, revitalizing the struggling program into a top-ranked contender. In 2010, Carroll was hired as the head coach of Seattle, leading the Seahawks to 14 consecutive playoff appearances, division titles, and Super Bowl appearances.

Carroll is the most recent head coach to be fired from the NFL, having been fired after a series of poor seasons. His combined NFL record as a head coach was 33–31, making him a better fit for college football than the NFL.
