Nickey Maxwell Van Exel, born on November 27, 1971, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was a basketball player who found solace in the sport. He attended St. Joseph High School and played basketball, leading his team to the state tournament WISAA. After facing racially discrimination at Trinity Valley Community College, he transferred to the University of Cincinnati in 1992, where he led the Bearcats to the NCAA Final Four and Elite Eight.

Van Exel was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1993 NBA draft and received NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors and became an NBA All-Star. He graduated with degrees in interdisciplinary studies in 2023.

Throughout his 13-year NBA career, Van Exel played for various teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2002, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Juwan Howard, Donnell Harvey, Tim Hardaway, and a 2002 first-round pick. In 2003, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Antawn Jamison, Chris Mills, Danny Fortson, and Jiří Welsch.

In 2004, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Dale Davis and Dan Dickau. With the Blazers, he played in only 53 games, averaging 11 points per game. In 2005, he signed with the San Antonio Spurs and announced his retirement due to knee and elbow injuries. Van Exel’s career lows in points and minutes were reported in 2006 by ESPN.
