Who is Van Exel?
Nickey Maxwell Van Exel was born on November 27, 1971, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, United States. He was raised by his mother, who worked night shifts at Chrysler. Nick found solace in basketball and spent most of his leisure time at local courts. He attended St. Joseph High School in Wisconsin and played basketball, leading his team to the state tournament WISAA.
He enrolled at Trinity Valley Community College in Texas, but faced racially discrimination. Nick decided to focus on his academics and transferred to the University of Cincinnati in 1992. He played for the Bearcats under coach Bob Huggins and led the team in points and assist until they lost to North Carolina in the elite 8.
In the 1993 NBA draft, Nick was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round, 37th overall pick. He played for the Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers, and San Antonio Spurs before ending his NBA career and transitioning into coaching.

Nick Van Exel attended Trinity Valley Community College for two years before enrolling at the University of Cincinnati. He played for the Bearcats and led them to the NCAA Final Four and Elite Eight. In his senior year, he became Cincinnati’s all-time leader in three-point field goals made, attempted, and percentage.
Van Exel was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1993 NBA draft and received NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors and became an NBA All-Star. He graduated with degrees in interdisciplinary studies in 2023.
In his 13-year NBA career, Van Exel played for several teams, including the San Antonio Spurs, Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers. He began his career with the Los Angeles Lakers as the 37th overall pick of the 1993 draft.
In 2002, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Juwan Howard, Donnell Harvey, Tim Hardaway, and a 2002 first-round pick. In Dallas, he contributed effectively by creating scoring opportunities and scoring key three-pointers. In 2003, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Antawn Jamison, Chris Mills, Danny Fortson, and Jiří Welsch.
In 2004, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Dale Davis and Dan Dickau. With the Blazers, he played in only 53 games, averaging 11 points per game.
In 2005, Van Exel signed with the San Antonio Spurs and announced that it would be his last season in an NBA uniform due to knee and elbow injuries. He averaged career lows in almost every statistical category, including points (5.5 ppg) and minutes (15 mpg). In 2006, ESPN reported that Van Exel would soon announce his retirement.
