Even if the Russian national is not extradited to Ghana, the government has started legal proceedings to punish him for allegedly filming and sharing intimate photos of Ghanaian women without their consent.
This was revealed on Wednesday at a joint news event with Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, and Sam George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations.
The suspect reportedly videotaped private interactions without authorization for publishing and monetized the information online, demanding fees and receiving payments through cryptocurrency channels, according to the Cyber Security Authority and criminal enforcement authorities’ investigations, he added.
George stated that the Attorney-General’s Department and the Ghana Police Service were drafting a docket for prosecution in absentia on behalf of the Cyber Security Authority.
“We are also preparing through the Cyber Security Authority to present a docket through the Police Service and Attorney-General for prosecution in absentia in our courts,” he said.
The ambassador acknowledged receiving the briefing, according to George, and affirmed that the information will be forwarded to the relevant Moscow authorities for additional review.
Despite the lack of an extradition treaty between Ghana and the Russian Federation, the ambassador said that the alleged behavior was illegal in Russia.
George said the government was implementing international arrest warrant procedures in collaboration with INTERPOL.
He clarified that an international arrest warrant would limit the suspect’s travel outside of Russia even if he was not extradited because of Russian constitutional constraints.
“As soon as he steps outside of Russia into any other country, he will be picked up to serve the sentence,” he stated.
In order to secure justice for the impacted ladies, Dr. Lartey reaffirmed the government’s resolve to see the case through to its natural legal end. “The assurance we are giving all Ghanaians is that nobody will violate any Ghanaian citizen and go,” she said.
