FIFA is set to pay a whopping $1 billion in prize money for the Club World Cup in the United States this year, according to someone close to the discussions.
This prize money is much higher than what was given out for the last men’s or women’s World Cups.
FIFA, the organization that oversees world football, has not shared many details about how they will finance this first 32-team tournament, scheduled to happen every four years.
However, they have recently secured deals with a broadcaster and major sponsors.
The British streaming service DAZN has obtained the exclusive global rights to broadcast the tournament, which runs from June 14 to July 13.
The deal is reportedly valued at around one billion euros, equivalent to $1.05 billion.
FIFA has also signed sponsorship agreements with well-known brands such as Coca-Cola, Bank of America, Chinese electronics company Hisense, and Belgian brewer AB InBev.
For context, the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar had a prize pool of $440 million, while the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand awarded $110 million.
In contrast, the newly expanded UEFA Champions League, featuring 36 clubs, will distribute €2.47 billion ($2.66 billion) in prize money this season.
The Club World Cup will be hosted in 12 different venues across 11 U.S. cities.
The final match will take place at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, which is also set to host the 2026 World Cup final.
