Wendy Shay, the award-winning Ghanaian singer, has reminisced about her ordeal in the hands of Ghanaians after being announced as the new artiste under Rufftown Records.
Wendy Shay claimed in a recent interview with Ghbase.com that her record label owner, Bullet, introduced her to Ghanaians immediately after Ebony’s death.
According to her, Ebony’s death and the fact that she was signed to a record label fueled animosity in the minds and hearts of Ghanaians, particularly admirers of the singer who died tragically in a vehicle accident.
The singer said that Ghanaians disliked her because they felt she was going to take Ebony’s place, and that she had received several texts from anonymous persons threatening to kill her.
She said that they were difficult times to live in since many people refused to purchase what she was trying to offer, but that her first commercial song was a hit.
In her own words she said:
“I received death threats in my DM. They say I was coming to take the place of their favourite artiste and they won’t let that happen”
“It was really hard, it was hard. It was just like they didn’t want you to make the world know what you have.
“In Ghana, if you are doing something and it’s really nice, they don’t want to applaud you for it because it’s beyond imagination. Because when you look at my story, my first song was a hit. Things like these have never happened”.
