became interested in music at seven years old and taught himself to play banjolele, guitar, and piano. At eight, he began taking classical music lessons.

Frampton was influenced by late 1950s and early 1960s rock acts such as Cliff Richard & the Shadows, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, the Ventures, Jimi Hendrix, and the Beatles. His father introduced him to the recordings of French gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.

By age 12, Frampton played in a band called the Little Ravens, playing with David Bowie and George and the Dragons. At 14, he joined the Trubeats and later the Preachers, which later became Moon's Train. Frampton's parents were concerned about his son playing late-night gigs while at school, so Alex Brown, a member of The Preachers, met his parents to show that the band members were responsible people.

In 1966, Frampton became a member of the Herd, scoring several British pop hits. He was named “The Face of 1968” by teen magazine Rave. In 1969, Frampton joined Steve Marriott of the Small Faces to form Humble Pie. He also did session recording with other artists, including George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and John Entwistle's Whistle Rymes in 1972. Pete Drake introduced him to the “talk box” guitar effect.

After four studio albums and one live album with Humble Pie, Frampton left the band in 1971, just in time for Rockin' the Fillmore to rise the US charts. He remained with Dee Anthony (1926-2009), the same personal manager that Humble Pie had used. Later in his career, Frampton found significant success as a solo artist, releasing several albums, including his breakthrough album, Frampton Comes Alive! (1976), which earned 8× Platinum by the RIAA in the United States.

Peter Frampton has three children from three marriages. He wed Mary Lovett for the first time in 1972 and she died in 1976. J. “Penny” McCall sued him for palimony in 1978, claiming she quit her career as a rock promoter to focus on Frampton full-time. Her complaint was dismissed by a judge in New York because Frampton and McCall had no intention of getting married and had never presented themselves as husband and wife to the public.

From 1983 to 1993, Frampton wed Barbara Gold, with whom he had two children, Julian and Jade. He married Tina Elfers for the third time in 1996.
