Can’t Citizens Demonstrate In Peace? – John Dumelo Asks

The arrest of over 50 protestors who took part in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse rally on Tuesday, September 21, 2023, has drawn the ire of Ghanaian politician and actor John Dumelo.

The #FixtheCountry campaigners organised the protest to call for a number of reforms, such as lower living expenses, an end to corruption, and better government.

In an attempt to stop the protest from continuing, the police filed an application for an injunction, citing COVID-19 guidelines and security concerns. Nevertheless, despite the police’s warnings, the demonstrators went ahead with the event.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing some police arresting protestors, who were primarily dressed in black and red, while others were on horses, in buses, and in pickup trucks. Some police were either in disguise, in their regular uniform, or in riot control gear. Several well-known activists, including the organiser of #FixtheCountry, Oliver Barker Vormawor, and journalist Bridget Otoo, were detained.
