Afrobeats artiste Kojo Blak is shedding light on one of the industry’s toughest realities: breaking through as a new act.

In a candid conversation on the On The Line podcast, the musician described securing a first hit song as the most demanding phase of any artiste’s career far tougher, he says, than maintaining momentum once recognition sets in.

“Getting your first hit is the hardest as an artist,” Kojo Blak said. “That is where there’s more work. When you get people to know you, it becomes a little easier.”

Beyond the grind of building a name, Kojo Blak also spoke about his mindset around competition in the industry. Rather than measuring himself against other artistes, he says his focus is entirely on personal growth pushing himself to outdo his own past work, both in the studio and on stage.

“I’m not in competition with anybody. I’m in competition with myself. I want to do better than I did before, even with my live performances, but I don’t feel pressured,” he explained.

The musician also touched on the thinking behind his forthcoming debut album, making clear that commercial timing isn’t driving the project. He isn’t chasing festive-season buzz or angling for slots on major concert bills the album, he says, is coming together on its own terms.

“I don’t really care about festive seasons. I’m not making the album to go and perform on big shows,” he noted.

Fans can expect Kojo Blak’s debut album to feature a lineup of collaborations, though further details on release timing have yet to be announced.
